Book Character Dress Up Day

Every year on March 2nd our school celebrates Dr. Seuss' birthday by allowing the students to dress up as book characters. It is a fun day to see how creative everyone gets with their outfits.

I was soooo excited about this day that I forgot my CAMERA! I was so devastated, but luckily, Coach Johnson was able to get it for me and drop it off at school - the day was saved!! That is, until I realized during BUS CALL that I never took any pictures!! I had to frantically run around the school trying to find those from the class who were still around....so if you were already gone, and I didn't get your picture, I apologize! (please forgive me!)

Here are some pictures that I did get...

Juliet was Fancy Nancy
Olivia and Amelia were twins from a Chapter Book series they love to read (one was evil and you can decide who that was - HA!)
Will was a character actually named Will! And Christopher was Captain Underpants :)
Jessica was Junie B. Jones, Carson was Fancy Nancy, and Kennedy just wanted to be in the picture! :)

And Tanya was Junie B. Jones as well! (I think the girls like the idea of wearing their pj's to school!)
9Ethan was a historical fiction soldier (forgive me, I cannot remember the name!)
Diana did it right as well as Junie B. Jones in her pj's!
I even dressed my personal little one has Pinkalicious!

And I just HAD to be Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games - see my homemade bow and arrows?? My wonderful husband made those for me! This character was my clever way of wearing comfy clothes to school! :)
We had so much fun dressing up (and being out of dress code!)

Book Clubs

Recently, the class started working through the novel "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" by Judy Blume. All year we have been practicing the different book club jobs that help us study all the different literary elements of a story. With "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" we were able to divide into small groups and work independently on the different jobs. One job each of the students had to work on was the "Character Sketcher". With the Character Sketcher job, students must be able to describe character traits of a particular character. The first character we described was Fudge. I thought it would be fun if each student created a "Brother for Sale" poster. On the poster they had to pretend that Fudge was their brother and they wanted to sell him. They had to write at least one sentence describing Fudge's negative character traits that made them want to sell Fudge. But then they had to presuade you to WANT to buy Fudge by writing one sentence describing his positive character traits. The class had fun brainstorming ideas and creating their poster. One of the best descriptions of Fudge that one student came up with was "Talented at being naughty". So clever! Here are a couple of pictures of their posters (sorry, they are all turned the wrong way! Oops!).

Merry Christmas!

I am so sorry to everyone for not keeping up with my blog! My home computer had a virus and it took me a while to get it fixed. But now we are ready to roll! I'm going to first post a slide show of our Christmas party. The class had so much fun celebrating together. They had 5 stations to rotate through. #1 - SNACKS! (Yum-o!) #2 - cookie decorating (DE-LISH!) #3 - Christmas BINGO (m&m's!) #4 - ornament making #5 - Silly reindeer games!

Happy be-lated Halloween!

The days leading up to Halloween, the class worked on a project called a storybird. The students were able to create their own stories at storybird.com. Since it was almost Halloween, I asked the class to try to create a unique Halloween themed story. I picked a few students' work to display below (these are unedited stories, so please ignore the typos, spelling mistakes, and sequencing errors).

Next time we use Story Bird, we will be using it as a tool to go through the writing process.

Career Day 2011

Friday was Career Day at BAS. Our class was able to have 4 different people come to our class and speak about their careers, past and present.

Our first visitor was Mr. Johnson (my father-in-law), who works for Synders Lance, Inc. Mr. Johnson was able to tell the class what he does every day, what he likes about his job...

We all agreed that the best part of his job would be the SNACKS!! And we were very lucky that Mr. Johnson brought snacks to share! Yum-o! Thanks Mr. Johnson!

Next, Mr. Chambers (another 4th grade teacher), visited to tell us about his previous career as a Navy Pilot - Very Cool!

He was even able to show a video of the jet he flew to help find submarines in the water.

Then, we had Ms. Sadler come and tell us what it is like to be an OR nurse.

Out of all the blood she sees, she said what she doesn't like and what grosses her out is SNOT AND BOOGERS! HA! ;)

And last, we had a visit from Mr. Williams who works for SunTrust bank in the mortgage department.

Mr. Williams was a BIG HIT because he gave the whole class candy and flashlight key chains!
FUN!

The class enjoyed all the speakers that came to visit! It was a successful career day!

Homecoming Pep Rally!!

Homecoming 2011 has finally come!!

Everyone was excited to show their school spirit!

The class had fun sitting together!

The Pep Rally started with the Marching Band seniors coming to play for the school! (The Academy was EXTRA special because the band did not visit another school!)

Alex, Will, and Carson B. were all introduced on their football teams (and I apologize that I missed getting pictures of them - so sorry!)

Olivia, Cindy, Amelia, and Jessica H. got to show their cheerleading routine!

All the teachers from each grade level put on a Homecoming skit - this is 5th grade dancing to "Dynamite".

4th grade put on a Buford vs. Decatur tug of war skit - of course it was the BEST! ;)

3rd grade played a cute, silly song :)

It was a great time with friends!
